Our members love interesting locations and good food. The January 27th Board of Directors and General Membership meetings were held at the new B.B. King's Blues Club at CityPlace, courtesy of the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitor's Bureau.
The Board had a packed agenda, with some important votes to consider. The first order of business was appointing someone to the Large City Representative Board seat vacated by former Lake Worth Mayor Jeff Clemens. The candidates, Lake Worth Commissioner Scott Maxwell and Wellington Councilman Matt Willhite, made brief presentations to the Board. Councilman Willhite was selected to complete the 2009-2010 term.
Next was the selection of the League's representative on the county's Commission on Ethics. Eight former elected officials applied, with Judge Edwards Rodgers prevailing after two rounds of voting. His selection was ratified later by the General Membership.
The Board also appointed its two members to the School District's Advisory Boundary Committee: returning member Stephen Waldman, and new face Councilman Fred Pinto of Royal Palm Beach. A big Thank You to Nellie Titcomb for your years of service representing the League on this important committee.
Resolution 10-01, Local Preference Policy, and the Youth Delegation bylaws were passed unanimously.
Welcome aboard to new member Robert F. Rennebaum, P.E., LEED, AP!
We had a record turnout for the General Membership meeting, with over 130 in attendance. No surprise, with the delicious food and a curiousity about the county's new hot spot.
Darlene Kostrub of Literacy Palm Beach County recognized Riviera Beach as the leader in efforts to promote literacy in that city.
Our keynote speaker was Jorge Pesquera, President/CEO of the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitor's Bureau. He spoke on their efforts in attracting visitors to the area and what municipalities can do to assist and benefit those efforts. Duane Knapp spoke on Community Branding, and Roger Amidon closed out the presentation.
